Shockwave Therapy in Ely, Cambridgeshire
Fenland Physio offers extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) at our clinic in Ely for patients with persistent tendon pain and musculoskeletal conditions that have not responded to conventional treatment. Shockwave therapy is a clinically proven, non-invasive treatment recommended by NICE and widely used across the NHS and private practice.
If you have been living with heel pain, tennis elbow, shoulder calcification or Achilles tendon problems for weeks or months, shockwave therapy may be the treatment that finally gets you moving again.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy uses high-energy acoustic pulses delivered through the skin to the affected area. These pulses stimulate blood flow, trigger the body’s natural healing response and break down calcified deposits in tendons and soft tissues. The treatment is non-surgical, requires no anaesthetic and each session typically lasts 10–15 minutes.
Most patients require 3–6 sessions, spaced one week apart, though you may notice improvement after the first or second session.
Conditions We Treat With Shockwave Therapy in Ely
Our clinicians use shockwave therapy to treat a range of chronic and stubborn musculoskeletal conditions:
- Plantar fasciitis — the most common cause of heel pain, particularly in runners and people who stand for long periods. Shockwave therapy has a success rate of 70–80% for plantar fasciitis that has not responded to other treatments.
- Achilles tendinopathy — chronic Achilles tendon pain affecting runners, walkers and active adults. ESWT promotes tendon remodelling and reduces pain.
- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) — persistent pain on the outside of the elbow that has not improved with rest, bracing or physiotherapy alone.
- Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) — pain on the inside of the elbow, common in gripping and throwing sports.
- Calcific shoulder tendinopathy — calcium deposits in the rotator cuff tendons causing significant pain and restricted movement. Shockwave can break down these deposits without surgery.
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (hip bursitis) — lateral hip pain that disrupts sleep and walking, often caused by gluteal tendon problems.
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee) — knee pain below the kneecap, common in basketball, volleyball and running.
- Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) — pain along the shinbone during running or high-impact activity.
Is Shockwave Therapy Effective?
Shockwave therapy has a positive response rate of 60–90% depending on the condition being treated, according to published clinical research. It is recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for several musculoskeletal conditions and is used routinely in NHS hospitals, professional sport and private physiotherapy clinics across the UK.
It is particularly effective for conditions that have been present for more than three months and have not responded to rest, exercises, injections or other treatments.
What to Expect During Treatment
Your first appointment includes a clinical assessment to confirm that shockwave therapy is appropriate for your condition. If suitable, treatment can begin immediately.
During the session, a gel is applied to the treatment area and the shockwave handpiece delivers controlled pulses. You will feel a tapping or flicking sensation that can be intense but is generally well tolerated. Sessions last around 10–15 minutes.
After treatment, you may experience some redness or mild soreness in the treated area for 24–48 hours. This is a normal part of the healing response. You can continue most normal activities, though your clinician will advise on any temporary modifications.
Shockwave Therapy Combined With Physiotherapy
At Fenland Physio, we do not use shockwave therapy in isolation. Your treatment is part of a comprehensive plan that typically includes targeted exercises, manual therapy and advice on activity modification. This combined approach gives the best long-term outcomes — treating the symptom and addressing the underlying cause.
